Engineering 2015, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 243-246 doi: 10.15302/J-ENG-2015039

Abstract:

The structure evolution of fluorinated graphite (CFx) upon the Li/Na intercalationThe Li/Na adsorption on single CF layer and intercalated into bulk CF have been calculated. The better cycling performance of Na intercalation into the CF cathode, comparing to that of Li intercalation, is attributed to the different strength and characteristics of the Li-F and Na-F interactions. The interactions between Li and F are stronger and more localized than those between Na and F.

Frontiers of Engineering Management   Pages 582-594 doi: 10.1007/s42524-021-0151-7

Abstract: Safety is one of the most critical themes in any large-scale railway construction project. Recognizing the importance of safety in railway engineering, practitioners and researchers have proposed various standards and procedures to ensure safety in construction activities. In this study, we first review four critical research areas of risk warning technologies and emergency response mechanisms in railway construction, namely, (i) risk identification methods of large-scale railway construction projects, (ii) risk management of large-scale railway construction, (iii) emergency response planning and management, and (iv) emergency response and rescue mechanisms. After reviewing the existing studies, we present four corresponding research areas and recommendations on the Sichuan–Tibet Railway construction. This study aims to inject new significant theoretical elements into the decision-making process and construction of this railway project in China.

Gongsheng LI, Xuhong GUO, Wang NA, Diancheng HAO, Mingyao ZHANG, Huixuan ZHANG, Jun XU

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 26-34 doi: 10.1007/s11705-010-0531-8

Abstract: The synergistic effect of phenolic and thio antioxidants on the stabilization of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) graft copolymers has been studied. Three commercial antioxidants Irganox245, Irganox1076 and dilauryl thiodipropionate (DLTP) were selected. Formulations based on hindered phenols and secondary antioxidant DLTP were prepared. Stabilization was monitored in terms of changes in the functional groups (oxidation products), tensile properties and yellowness index. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) were also used to assess the stability. The results indicated that the combination of Irganox245 and DLTP showed much better stabilization effect than the individual components due to the strong synergistic effect. Only weak synergism could be observed in the formulation that contained Irganox1076 and DLTP. Irganox1076 and Irgnox1076/DLTP exhibited similar behaviors between antioxidants with the highest and lowest efficiencies.

Porcine pluripotent stem cells: progress, challenges and prospects

Jianyong HAN, Yi-Liang MIAO, Jinlian HUA, Yan LI, Xue ZHANG, Jilong ZHOU, Na LI, Ying ZHANG, Jinying

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 8-27 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2018233

Abstract:

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are characterized by their capacity for high self-renewal and multiple differentiation potential and include embryonic stem cells, embryonic germ cells and induced PSCs. PSCs provide a very suitable model for the studies of human diseases, drugs screening, regenerative medicine and developmental biology research. Pigs are considered as an ideal model for preclinical development of human xenotransplantation, therapeutic approaches and regenerative medicine because of their size and physiological similarity to humans. However, lack of knowledge about the derivation, characterization and pluripotency mechanisms of porcine PSCs hinders progress in these biotechnologies. In this review, we discuss the latest progress on porcine PSCs generation, evaluation criteria for pluripotency, the scientific and technical questions arising from these studies. We also introduce our perspectives on porcine PSC research, in the hope of providing new ideas for generating naive porcine PSCs and animal breeding.

Reprogramming of the pig primordial germ cells into pluripotent stem cells: a brief review

Qijing LEI, Qin PAN, Shuai YU, Na LI, Shulin CHEN, Kuldip SIDHU, Jinlian HUA

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 28-32 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2018222

Abstract:

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are regarded as unipotent cells that can produce only either spermatogonia or oocytes. However, PGCs can be converted into the pluripotent state by first dedifferentiation to embryonic germ cells and then by reprogramming to induce them to become pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These two stages can be completely implemented with mouse cells. However, authentic porcine iPSCs have not been established. Here, we discuss recent advances in the stem cell field for obtaining iPSCs from PGCs. This knowledge will provide some clues which will contribute to the regulation of reprogramming to pluripotency in farm species.

Abatement of mixed volatile organic compounds in a catalytic hybrid surface/packed-bed discharge plasma reactor

Lianjie Guo, Nan Jiang, Jie Li, Kefeng Shang, Na Lu, Yan Wu

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 2, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1017-z

Abstract: In this study, post plasma-catalysis degradation of mixed volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, and xylene) has been performed in a hybrid surface/packed-bed discharge plasma reactor with Ag-Ce/ g-Al O catalyst at room temperature. The effect of relative air humidity on mixed VOCs degradation has also been investigated in both plasma-only and PPC systems. In comparison to the plasma-only system, a significant improvement can be observed in the degradation performance of mixed VOCs in PPC system with Ag-Ce/ g-Al O catalyst. In PPC system, 68% benzene, 89% toluene, and 94% xylene were degraded at 800 J·L , respectively, which were 25%, 11%, and 9% higher than those in plasma-only system. This result can be attributed to the high catalytic activity of Ag-Ce/ g-Al O catalyst to effectively decompose O and lead to generating more reactive species which are capable of destructing the VOCs molecules completely. Moreover, the presence of Ag-Ce/ g-Al O catalyst in plasma significantly decreased the emission of discharge byproducts (NO and O ) and promoted the mineralization of mixed VOCs towards CO . Adding a small amount of water vapor into PPC system enhanced the degradation efficiencies of mixed VOCs, however, further increasing water vapor had a negative impact on the degradation efficiencies, which was primarily attributed to the quenching of energetic electrons by water vapor in plasma and the competitive adsorption of water vapor on the catalyst surface. Meanwhile, the catalysts before and after discharge were characterized by the Brunauer-Emment-Teller and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Ruixia SHEN,Chunyan TIAN,Zhidan LIU,Yuanhui ZHANG,Baoming LI,Haifeng LU,Na DUAN

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2015, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 266-275 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2015064

Abstract: Algal blooms have become a worldwide environmental concern due to water eutrophication. Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province, China is suffering from severe eutrophication and is listed in the Three Important Lakes Restoration Act of China. Hydrothermal liquefaction allows a promising and direct conversion of algal biomass into biocrude oil. In this study, algal samples were collected from Dianchi Lake after a separation procedure including dissolved air flotation with polyaluminum chloride and centrifugation during four months, April, June, August and October. The algal biochemical components varied over the period; lipids from 0.7% to 2.1% ash-free dry weight (afdw), protein from 20.9% to 33.4% afdw and ash from 36.6% to 45.2% dry weight. The algae in June had the highest lipid and protein concentrations, leading to a maximum biocrude oil yield of 24.3% afdw. Biodiversity analysis using pyrosequencing revealed different distributions of microbial communities, specifically in April (89.0%), June (63.7%) and August (84.0%), and in April (2.2%), June (12.0%) and August (1.0%). This study demonstrated remarkable temporal changes in the biochemical composition and biodiversity of algae harvested from Dianchi Lake and changes in biocrude oil production potential.

In vitro agonistic and antagonistic endocrine disrupting effects of organic extracts from waste water of different treatment processes

Kaifeng RAO, Na LI, Mei MA, Zijian WANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 69-78 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0502-7

Abstract: Effluents from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) have been reported to have a broad spectrum of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). The majority of studies have focused on the occurrence of estrogenic activity, while ignoring nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) pathways. In the present study, a battery of in vitro yeast bioassays and a cell bioassay, including antagonistic and agonistic effects on estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen-related receptor (ERR) and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), were conducted to evaluate the removal efficiencies of EDCs by different treatment processes of a WWTP located in Beijing. Estrogenic, anti-estrogenic, anti- androgenic, anti-progesteronic, anti-ERR and the activation of AHR activities were detected in samples from all treatment processes and the receiving water. The concentration of estrogenic contaminants with estradiol (E ) equivalent concentrations ranged from 0.82 × 10 to 3.54 × 10 g E -EQ·L . The concentration of anti-estrogenic contaminants with 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT) equivalent concentrations ranged from 1.24 × 10 to 2.36 × 10 g 4-OHT-EQ·L . The concentration of anti-androgenic contaminants ranged from 2.21 × 10 to 3.52 × 10 g flutamide-EQ·L . The concentration of anti-progesteronic contaminants ranged from 3.15 × 10 to 2.71 × 10 g RU486-EQ·L . The concentration of anti-ERR contaminants ranged from 7.09 × 10 to 6.50 × 10 g 4-OHT-EQ·L . The concentration of AHR activators ranged from 1.7 × 10 to 3.4 × 10 g TCDD-EQ·L . These processes including secondary clarifier, coagulation, as well as coal and sand filtration could eliminated 67.2% of estrogenic contaminants, 47.0% of anti-estrogenic contaminants, 98.3% of anti-androgenic contaminants, 88.4% of anti-progesteronic contaminants, 65.4% of anti-ERR contaminants and 46.9% of AHR activators. WWTP effluents contain multiple receptor disruptors may have very complex adverse effects on exposed organisms.
